The Rob Schultz Junior Scholar Award

Rob Schultz (1977-2016)

It was with tremendous sadness that we received word in May 2016 regarding the passing of our fellow scholar, colleague, and dear friend Rob Schultz. In addition to his teaching and research activities at the University of Kentucky, Rob was co-founder of the Analytical Approaches to World Music journal and the associated conference series. We miss him dearly and are grateful to have had the opportunity to share these activities with him.

Working in close association with Rob’s family, the editors and organizers of the Analytical Approaches to World Music (AAWM) journal and conference series have established the Rob Schultz Junior Scholar Award to honor our dear friend and colleague.

The award is open to graduate students and young scholars within five years of graduation and is awarded on a biennial basis as part of the AAWM conference series. For each conference, the best paper presented by a junior scholar is selected for publication in the AAWM journal, and the author also receives a cash prize of $1000 dollars sponsored and awarded by The Bove Family Foundation and Schultz Family, respectively.

Those AAWM conference presenters interested in applying for the award may forward submissions to Specify 'Rob Schultz Junior Scholar Award' in the subject line. Formatting and other requirements are the same as for submissions to the AAWM journal, all of which can be found at

To fund this award in Rob’s memory, AAWM is accepting donations at
